Activities

The activity of the Omega Plastic Srl runs in accordance with Art. 183 of Legislative Decree no. 152/2006, as amended by Legislative Decree December 3, 2010, n. 205 "provisions implementing Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on waste and repealing certain Directives", which considers as waste "any substance or object which the holder discards or 'intends to discard ". In light of this, and with reference to the particular case of fishing nets being disused and / or seized, when the fishermen or ports decide to discard them, they must be considered "waste", although there is no explicit requirement from the ERC European category.

Therefore, Omega Plastic Srl presented proposals to various Italian ports whereby Omega, at is own cost, and as an authorised company, would withdraw, transport and recycle for free fishing nets abandoned and / or seized. As a result, after just one year of operation, there have been several withdrawals at different Italian ports and various agreements signed with various port authorities.

The company Omega Plastic, as part of the withdrawals that have already been conducted in Italian ports, has, at its own expense, carried out an inspection at the various depots of the ports where nets were to be disposed of. Furthermore, Omega has taken samples from the harbor and carried out a classification of the refuse by accredited laboratories, in order to assess its ‘non-dangerous-status’ and then allocate the correct EWC code, before proceeding to withdrawal.

As part of these activities, we wish to make a qualitative estimate of the costs saved by each harbormaster by giving nets to Omega Plastic rather than dispose of them as we did until now. The cost saved (assuming that all the expenses were borne by Omega Plastic) is composed of multiple tax rates; there is one for the transport of waste, the disposal, the cost to the operators, the extra crane and the costs for administration (such as forms, mud, etc..). Considering that with this type of landfill waste every harbormaster would spend about 125 euro per tonne plus VAT, the ports have saved a total of approximately 8,500 Euros. Moreover, considering the cost to transport to be approximately 1.8 euro per kilometer, the cost of the operator, the extra spider and administrative costs (such as MUDs and forms), the harbor master have saved a total of approximately 31,000 Euros. In light of this, it is believed that the ports that have given to Omega Plastic Srl not only acted correctly from an environmental point of view as they have opted for an action for recovery of the material in spite of the landfill, but have also saved from an economic point of view.

In order to carry out its activities, the company in question has produced a special insurance policy extended to third parties and subcontractors to cover all risks of personal injury and / or property of third parties arising after the completion of the withdrawal of waste.
